The work series Lichtbilder is devoted to the endorsement of gaze regimes and the change in the temporal dimension of image perception and generation. The works created in this series from 2003 to 2005 take the sluggishness of visual perception as the basis for linking real space and a dynamic, semiotic space.

The works in the series consist of MDF panels covered with several translucent epoxy resin layers – glossy, monochrome panels. Vertical light bars consisting of 32 light-emitting diodes are embedded into these tableaus. The red, white or blue LED bars, which are at first identifiable as compositional elements, generate words that are broken down into points of light.

Two fundamentally different regimes of gaze collide in these works. While conscious image viewing requires a precise vision, perception of the words flickering over the light bars requires exactly the opposite viewing mode. The coded letters converted into a temporal sequence of high-frequency pulses become legible when the observer gives up a natural, receptive pattern of reading. What is needed is a free-floating gaze, a look past the object. The eye scans in a horizontal movement and itself becomes the image carrier.

In this phenomenon, the so-called "after-effect" illusion of the eye is called into action: a moving, point-like light source – or, contrariwise, a stationary light source in relation to the rapid movement of the eye – is beheld as a light strip. As after-images that are produced on the retina and interpreted in the brain, the words "holograms" are generated via the light bars exhibited in the room.

The word series generated on the light bar (each approx. 100 terms) refers to different thematic spheres, which are condensed associatively by sequence and rhythm. The thematics include perceptual patterns, time, crisis, work and gender difference.
